We usually grind four to six inches below grade (ground level). If deeper grinding is required, we will discuss this with you. However, several restrictions exist on the depth to which a stump can be ground. The stump-grinding blade is roughly 10 inches in diameter and can only be moved up and down within a specific range. A tree developed in shallow soil may not have six inches of grindable depth. Other materials near or around the tree may limit the depth of the grinder. While the stump grinder is powerful, it is only intended for use with plant materials, wood, and dirt. We usually do not grind deep enough to risk interfering with properly established utility lines or buried cables, but unforeseen impediments may need a shallower grind.
